It boasts the largest collection of Russian art in the world. This museum was created by the brothers Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov in 1856. The founder is Moscow's industrialist Pavel Tretyakov, who acquired works by Russian artists, hoping to create a public museum of national art. His dream came true! There are two separate buildings: the Old Building of the Tretyakov Gallery. Inside you can find Russian icons and paintings ranging in date from the 11th to the early 20th century. Russian's 20th-century art is displayed in the New Building.

Opened in 1981 in honor of the 20^th anniversary of the first flight into space made by Yury Gagarin, Among the 85,000 objects in the museum's collection are the first Soviet rocket engine, the moon rover Lunokhod, the first Soviet satellite, the personal belongings of the first Soviet astronaut, specimens from the moon and propaganda posters reflecting the "space race", sections dedicated to the International Space Station.
